This is so true. I have sung in quite a few Carol concerts this year from Schools to the Lansdowne Club. It is noticeable that the younger generation are reticent to join in the singing although alcohol can certainly help! Seasons greetings to you and your followers Cindy 🥂

Your report of 'guitar riffs and confetti,' at a carol service invoked the following passage from Mencius:

"All human beings have a mind that cannot bear to see the sufferings of others . . . .” (2A:6.1 tr. Bloom)

I feel your pain.

Congratulations for having the bravery to write on such a personal note. Let’s all take the time to talk, to show an interest whenever we can , so that the suppliers of services can feel hat they too are human, not just units in someone’s business plan.

I see beyond convenience of these smart apps that creates cashless society that seemingly overnight eliminates petty crimes like robberies and pickpockets since no one has cash in China. However, there is rise in cybercrimes and scam centers like those in Cambodia making major news recently. Current digital recluses does help these scammers who could convince otherwise smart individuals often professionals, to depart with their money that could be prevented if they just talk to someone.

Frequent movement, or a mode of life that anticipates frequent movement, forestalls the desire to form these connections and prioritises the role of global, invisible, 'anywhere' connections which can persist over locational change, I think.

Mirroring this is expectation for stability of interlocutor: do you expect the same barista over the next few years or are they students cycling through the place every few months? Even the local postie has agency replacements.

Recalling what we call on the youth to do: move for a job, constantly be on the look for the next house (and housemates) to rent, and what the economy is doing in fostering a 'gig' economy, can we be surprised? Is it possible to 'connect' with your uber driver, your deliveroo driver, in the same way that you might connect with the barkeep at your Club?
