Very balanced, as ever. I would err strongly on the Charlie side of the ledger here, rather than the Kerry side (many reasons, but Whipling's recent missive explains a lot). And let's be clear, Charles Parton is NOT a 'hawk' (too often used pejoratively these days) to Kerry's 'dove'—he is a savvy China watcher who draws on considerable experience. Bottom line, I think—not far from Cindy's own position—is that China is indeed a major threat on several fronts where the state apparatus acts aggressively, illegally, and extraterritorially. And, when those instances arise, Beijing *should* be called out for exactly what it is.

Cindy Yu, are YOU a challenge or a threat to the UK?

I have been an enthusiastic follower of your column in The Speccie from the start. I recall that you left communist China with your family when you all were offered a chance to share with us the privileges of democratic freedom.

So when you say that you feel that we should regard China more as a " ‘challenge’ ... than ‘threat’ " I find this both 'surprising' and hypocritical given the easy way of life that would be denied to you now without your parents foresight, etc.

You admit that "China does pose some threats – cyber-espionage, IP theft (especially in previous decades), control of critical infrastructure."

But that list doesn't scratch the surface. As a PPE graduate from Oxford you will know very well of the deep infiltration of our universities by Chinese students and the control exercised over them by the CCP requiring them to collect research and other sensitive material for transmission back to China.

By their successful plan to monopolise access to rare earth minerals essential for mass manufacture of EVs - and many other IT related products - they have succeeded in destroying what was left of our (& EU's) motor industry.

Their 'Belt and Road' programme has fraudulently enabled the takeover of ports and to take control of natural resources of many small countries throughout the 'third' world.

And on it goes. This is not just a THREAT to the UK, but also to the whole WESTERN CAPITALIST way of life, which has reduced poverty and promoted basic healthcare amongst much of the undeveloped world.

So when you fail to mention the CCP's plan to redevelop and move their embassy to the Royal Mint site and to refuse to divulge detailed plans for the cellar, which 'conveniently' straddles the main communication system controlling the City of London's financial centre, I have to wonder where your loyalties really lie.

So Cindy Yu, are YOU a challenge or a threat to the UK?
